An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had arranged a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a big ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
