RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
