Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
