The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
